Keystroke Dynamics

Keystroke Dynamics can be traced back to the late 19th century when telegraph operators were able to identify each other based on their unique "tapping signatures". This ability to recognize individuals by their typing rhythm was further developed during World War II when military intelligence employed a technique called "The Fist of the Sender" to distinguish allied from enemy Morse code operators based on their keystroke patterns.

In the 1970s and 1980s several researchers conducted experiments that established that everyone possesses unique typing signatures that could be used as identifiers. A key milestone in the development of keystroke dynamics occurred in the 1980s when the National Science Foundation commissioned Rand to test its potential as a computer security technology. The tests were successful, but it wasn't until 2000 that keystroke dynamics gained wider recognition by passing the Financial Services Technology Consortium/International Biometric Group comparative testing program, establishing it as a viable candidate for IT security and e-commerce applications.

Keystroke Dynamics is being used today in various high-security environments, including banking and governmental institutions. Studies have demonstrated that keystroke dynamics can achieve accuracy rates as high as 99,5%.
